I tend to buy the fabric all in one go, and then let it sit around for a month, when my mom FINALLY decides she's going to help me (im insecure, so I have to have someone telling me im fine all the time, even though im the only one acctuly doing anything). THEN I work on it for like, an hour or so measuring and cuting for a few days, and then let it sit around for another month and THEN sew it all together. But I have to have my next one done by halloween so I need to kick me n' my mum's arse into action XD
It really depends on the costume I'm making, the quality of the material I'm using, and the amount of time I have to make them. For example: I'm already starting to work on my halloween costume. Why? Because I already know it's going to take me a few months. I have always had trouble working with pleather and wouldn't you know it the character's outfit is mostly leather. (screw using real leather I don't have the time, machine, or money) However my Yuna costume for last year was made in the matter of a few hours because I decided three days before halloween that I didn't feel like wearing my Yuffie cosplay. (bad choice btw. Walking around with friends in those heels hurt) But now that I actually want to do some real cosplaying as the character I'm remaking the entire thing out of a better material and I'm spending a lot more time on it. So like I said it really depends on quality and time I can put into it. (if anyone read that entire thing you deserve a cookie)
the ones that are exact to the characters i spend years making... like 5 or more. the ones that are character everyday clothing takes me minutes but works.
its usually a matter of many hours spread across a few weeks... or months... my faye valentine, for example, only took around 14 hours, due to handstitching some pieces, dyeing fabric, etc... but took me a couple months to finally complete
